“Painting w/ Fiber”!

Paula Chung hales from Southern California but is now a Tahoe Resident.  “Painting with fiber” is a description she uses when describing her art.

Paula began quilting in the early 1970’s, using the old tried and true methods: hand tracing templates, hand sewing all the little pieces into blocks and quilting the whole piece by hand.  She enjoyed the pattern and color manipulation, but knowing the outcome of the piece before it was completed lost its appeal.  In the 1990’s she became aware of the art quilt movement and found a new direction for her craft.  A true textile artist has now evolved and she is working toward a professional career in this field.  Her efforts include working on an art degree at LTCC and expanding her knowledge through participation in professional associations, classes and numerous juried shows.  Most shows are throughout the United States, but, Paula has also been accepted in exhibits in Japan, where textile art is held in high esteem.  In 2008 Paula won a Silver Award and a Bronze Award in The 9th Quilt Nihon Exhibition, Tokyo, Japan.  Check out Ms. Chung’s web site: www.paulachung.com.

Beautiful flowers from her garden have provided inspiration and subject matter for much of Paula’s art.  Her garden quilt series began with intriguing photos she took of tulips from her garden in the spring of 2005.  Her quilts became more stylized and abstract with color and shapes telling the story.  Working with her own hand dyed silks, Paula uses a special raw-edge appliqué technique without fusible materials then densely free-form quilts to give additional texture.  Pieces are backed to be hung individually or to be framed.

This past spring, Paula was accepted to participate in ArtQuilt Elements 2010, April 17 – May 19, 2010, at The Wayne Art Center, Wayne, PA.  Her entry, Japanese Anemone, 88” x 52”, was selected for the Cover Photo for the exhibit catalogue.

Another honor recently came Paula’s way: she was asked to make a large silk piece for the LTCC’s new library – the subject was to be something reflecting Tahoe’s beautiful scenery.  She chose a pine bough image, inspired by the Jeffery Pine trees at Nevada Beach.
